Istanbul-based Navtek Naval Technologies has completed construction of a new all-electric tug slated for Turkish operator Gisas Shipbuilding Industry. Named Gisas Power II, the tug is one in a series of three ordered by the same customer.

The DNV-classed newbuild has an LOA of 18.7 metres, a beam of 6.7 metres, a design draught of 3.5 metres, a gross tonnage of 107, and four crewmembers. The tug is notable for its battery-only propulsion, which was incorporated to ensure lower noise and emissions, improved manoeuvrability, and more effective energy management capability, all while guaranteeing significantly reduced operating expenses.

Two Corvus Energy 1,423kWh lithium-ion batteries drive two azimuthing propellers via 925kW motors to enable Gisas Power II to achieve a speed of 11.3 knots and a bollard pull of approximately 30 tonnes. Navtek said the tug's operations can help generate 210 tonnes fewer CO2 emissions in one year while NOx emissions can be reduced by nine tonnes over a similar period.

Charging of the batteries is via a shore power facility with a total capacity of 1,200 kWh also developed by Navtek. This enables the batteries to be fully charged within one hour, and a single charge will allow multiple ship handling trips to be completed. For redundancy, the tug features two separate battery compartments.

The tug is also designed to be fitted with Navtek's proprietary smart energy management system, which can help optimise electrica power consumption to extending range and operating cycles. The system can collect data on parameters such as vessel speed, weather, and battery temperature and collate these into an easily readable format that can be accessed via web browser and mobile device. This can help operators decide on optimal sailing routes and properly schedule towing operations.

Gisas Power II will operate alongside its two sisters in serving clients in Istanbul Harbour.
