By John Hendy
From Baird Maritime:
England's Isle of Wight ferries and their long series of owners provide an epic seafaring saga.
Reading this very clear, informative and well-illustrated book your reviewer soon realised that he had travelled on a large number of the ferries described. Having started travelling on them in 1975, it was surprising to note how many different ferries had been used over the intervening 35 years.
While the Solent and adjoining waterways are really only narrow little strips it is amazing how much ferry activity such a thinly populated island as Wight has generated.
The Isle of Wight ferries have suffered from some unfortunate, usually government, owners. That has not always helped their choice of vessels or their operational efficiencies.
The author concentrates on the vessels rather than the politics but he provides a useful contribution to the history of the ferry services nevertheless.
