Harbour pilot dies following boarding mishap in Sandy Hook, New York

The US Coast Guard responded with units from the New York City Fire Department and New York City Police Department Harbor Police to an incident where a Sandy Hook Harbor pilot fell while boarding the merchant vessel Maersk Kensington at 04:30 local time on Monday, December 30.

The pilot, who has been identified as Dennis R. Sherwood, was transported to a hospital on Staten Island by a Sandy Hook pilot vessel but eventually succumbed to injuries received in the fall.

The coast guard has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall.
