The US Navy said in a statement dated March 13 that the expedition crew aboard the late Paul G. Allen's research vessel Petrel has discovered the wreckage of the aircraft carrier USS Wasp, which was sunk during World War II.
The sunken warship was found on January 14 of this year in the Coral Sea, 4,200 metres below the surface.
Wasp was sunk on September 15, 1942, by four torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-19 while escorting transports carrying US Marines to Guadalcanal as reinforcements. Of the 2,162 on board the carrier, 176 were killed as a result of the attack.
