Keel laid for research vessel Severnyy Polyus

United Shipbuilding Corporation's (USC) Admiralty Shipyard has held a keel laying ceremony for Severnyy Polyus ("North Pole"), a new Project 00903 ice-resistant research vessel ordered by the Federal Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring Service.

The vessel will be used to carry out year-round comprehensive scientific research in the northern portions of the Arctic Ocean.

Missions will include geological, acoustic, geophysical, and oceanographic research.

Severnyy Polyus will have a length of 83.1 metres, a beam of 22.5 metres, a displacement of 10,390 tonnes, a speed of 10 knots, accommodations for 14 crew and 34 scientific staff, and a helicopter deck.
