Amman, Jordan-based potash producer Arab Potash Company has awarded Dutch engineering firm Royal IHC a contract for the construction of a new shallow-draught pontoon that will be used for harvesting salt from the Dead Sea.

The vessel machine will be equipped with four tracks. Royal IHC said the track suspension and the steering system will be optimised for reliability and easy maintenance, ensuring minimal downtime for the operator.

The salt harvesting pontoon will be fully electric, thus minimising its carbon footprint and allowing APC to operate the vessel without any adverse impact on the surrounding marine environment.

The vessel will also be equipped with a 2.1-kilometre-long floating pipeline for efficient salt transportation. It will also include a day accommodation with an operator cabin and a sunroof covering the full length of the harvester.
