Greenpeace has entered into an agreement with Freire Shipyard of Spain for the construction of a new sailing vessel.

The 75-metre vessel will be designed by Amsterdam-based Dykstra Naval Architects in partnership with Longitude Engineering.

The vessel will have 2,000 square metres of sails as its main propulsion. Battery packs and PV panels will also be available to serve as backup.

Dykstra Naval Architects said the vessel will also be equipped with power systems that will allow for the use of green hydrogen and e-methanol to cover the remaining energy demand.

The vessel is scheduled to enter service in 2027 after adequate funds have been raised. Greenpeace said it has been designed to transition to 100 per cent green energy as soon as technically and logistically possible.
