Norwegian fishing company Nergard Havfiske formally named its newest stern trawler in a ceremony in Tromso on Thursday, June 13. Delivered by local shipbuilder Vard in December last year, Sørkapp ("South Cape") is the final vessel in a series of three built for the same owner.
The trawler was developed by Vard in close collaboration with Nergård Havfiske. The objective was to create an advanced trawler with excellent fuel economy and that is outfitted for semi-pelagic and bottom-trawling operations emphasising gentle handling of the catch. This will enable the owner to meet the latest requirements for fish health, efficiency, and environmental-friendly operation.
The hull is ice strengthened according to Ice 1A. The vessel, with its propulsion system, is compliant with DNV's Silent F notation.
The living quarters have been developed with a high focus on crew welfare with architect-designed public spaces, day and mess rooms, a fitness room, and cabins with low noise. The trawler is also fitted with Vard Electro's proprietary energy storage system, which will be charged from permanent magnet motors on the trawl winches while in shooting mode and can also contribute power to heaving mode on the trawl winches.
A power management system allows seamless integration with the hybrid propulsion system to minimise fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. A heat recovery system is also available to further increase overall efficiency.
