The government of Maldives has begun a land reclamation project wherein an island in the Fushi Dhiggaru Lagoon will be expanded by approximately 1,153 hectares.
The inauguration of the Ras Male land reclamation project, Maldives' largest land reclamation project to date, was held on Monday, December 18, in a ceremony with the country's President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as guest of honour.
According to the President, Ras Malé is being built as an island with adequate area to fulfill international standards. The reclamation will add three metres above the existing island surface in the middle and approximately two metres above on either side, enabling it to surpass the height designated as a secure island under international criteria.
The development of Fushi Dhiggaru Lagoon seeks to address traffic congestion and housing shortages in nearby Male region. The government expects to have built 65,000 housing units, comprising plots and apartments, by the time the project is completed.
