Canadian shipbuilder Chantier Davie has opened the National Icebreaker Centre (NIC), a new hub specialising in research into the design, engineering, and construction of new polar and ice-capable vessels.
In addition to introducing a fleet of new icebreakers into service with the Canadian government, the NIC also seeks to explore opportunities in the export market with the aim of replacing other countries' ice-capable vessels that are over 40 years old.
The research centre is located near Davie's main shipyard in Quebec.
