Tugs have been used to assist a near-new container ship after mechanical problems caused it to ground in the Suez Canal in Egypt.

Tugtechnologyandbusiness.com reports the Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL)-operated OOCL Japan grounded on sand.

It's believed the ship was turned by the grounding as the 21,413 TEU box ship was on route from Singapore to Felixstowe, UK.

A fleet of tugs deployed by Egyptian authorities refloated the ship within hours, allowing it to continue its journey.

OOCL Japan was built by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea and christened on September 1.
