Sanmar Shipyards of Turkey has launched the first in a series of two Robert Allan Ltd-designed tugs ordered by the Orkney Islands Council.

Named Odin of Scapa, the vessel is currently undergoing final fitting out and equipment commissioning. After a period of sea trials in Turkey, it will sail on its delivery voyage to its new owners with an expected arrival in the second week of May 2020.

Sister tug Thor of Scapa is due to arrive in Orkney two months afterward.

The 32-metre vessels will replace two of the three tugs currently operated by Orkney Islands Council Marine Services. The name Vale of Scapa will be held in reserve and used if the council decides in future to replace the third tug as well.

Both Odin of Scapa and Thor of Scapa have bollard pulls ranging from 70 to 80 tonnes and are built to full tanker escort capability.
