Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, ClassNK, and IHI Power Systems have entered into a joint research and development agreement to put the world's first ammonia-fueled tug into practical use.

The partners will develop an improved variant of their earlier vessel project, which was also the first Japanese-flagged tug to be powered by LNG.

NYK will design the hull and the fuel supply system while IHI will focus on the design of the exhaust gas after-treatment equipment. ClassNK will conduct a safety assessment of the vessel upon its completion.

NYK said the ammonia-fueled tug is expected to enter full-scale production following the evaluation of the R&D project results.
