Sanmar Shipyards of Turkey recently held a sheet metal-cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction of three electric harbour tugs in a series ordered by Canadian operator HaiSea Marine.

The Robert Allan Ltd-designed tugs will each have a length of 28 metres and a bollard pull of 70 tonnes. Power will be provided by a Corvus Energy 5,288kWh battery pack.

The tugs are scheduled to become operational in 2023. They will provide berthing/unberthing assistance for LNG carriers at the LNG Canada export terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia, following commissioning of the plant around the middle of the decade.
