A new joint venture that includes Norwegian engineering company TECO 2030 has begun developing a new design of tanker to be powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

TECO 2030 said it expects the tanker to be capable of emitting zero emissions while at berth while a 100 per cent reduction in GHG emissions can be achieved during each voyage. The company said the project is in line with the GHG emissions reduction targets set by the European Union.

TECO 2030's joint venture partners on the project include Swedish shipping company Ektank, Shell Shipping and Maritime, and classification society DNV.
