An accident on September 1 aboard chemical tanker Key Fighter, has left one of its crew dead and one seriously injured.
The two crew members were carrying out work inside a chemical tank onboard the ship while it was docked at Stadlandetin, Norway, when they were found by other crew members. The two unconscious crew were airlifted by rescue helicopter to a nearby hospital where one was pronounced dead.
Initial police reports indicate are that both crew members were exposed to hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas which in high concentrations, can lead to pulmonary edema, extreme breathing difficulty, sudden unconsciousness and death.
The Key Fighter is a Maltese-registered ship that carries rapeseed oil. According to a report from vesseltracker.com, the tanker was released later the same day bound for Erith, United Kingdom.
