Norwegian naval architects Breeze Ship Design has joined a pilot project that seeks to introduce a new type of ammonia-fueled Aframax oil tanker.
The 110,000DWT vessel will utilise a Breeze tanker design fitted with ammonia fuel storage and bunkering systems.
Other partners on the project include Equinor, DNV, Yara International, Grieg, and Altera Infrastructure. The project's main objectives include investigating the technical and economic applicability of ammonia engines, fuel, and bunkering systems on a generic tanker design and understanding operational safety aspects and competence requirements.
The ultimate goal of the pilot project is to provide an ammonia-powered tanker to operate on charter with Equinor.
