Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam has begun construction on two marine fuel barges for Calgary, Alberta-based Wolverine Terminals.

Designed by Robert Allan Ltd, the barges will be operated as part of a marine fuel supply chain at the Port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia beginning in 2023.

The two barges are of unique designs specifically tailored for the site and intended operations. There will be a rail/terminal barge and a distribution barge.

The 12,400DWT, 142- by 30-metre rail/terminal barge design will facilitate the loading and storage of multiple tank rail cars and in-hull storage of marine fuels. The design will incorporate a double hull, cargo handling equipment, tank heating, spill prevention and recovery equipment, and onboard and shore power availability at the operating facilities.

The 4,800DWT, 78- by 20-metre distribution barge will be highly similar in design to other marine fuel distribution barges operating in the Port of Vancouver and other west coast ports. The design will incorporate a double hull, cargo handling equipment, tank heating, spill prevention and recovery equipment, on-board power generation, and operating facilities.
