Container activity at Port Houston's Barbours Cut and Bayport facilities has increased 22 per cent as its US$700 million modernisation program starts to improve efficiency.

Executive Director Roger Guenther said port facilities handled 28.8 million tons of cargo year to date, a nine per cent increase over the first three quarters of 2016, in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Container volume at the Texas port recorded an 11 per cent increase from last year.

The Port Commission also welcomed this week's delivery of three post-Panamax wharf cranes that bring the total number of cranes at Barbours Cut to seven.
