The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) handled a record 4.2 million TEU in Fiscal Year 2018, an 8.4 per cent increase year-over-year, or 325,000 additional units.
The GPA capped FY18 with its 20th consecutive month of positive year-over-year growth. In June, the Port of Savannah handled 370,725 TEU, up 9.8 per cent, 33,014 TEU, over June 2017.
In addition, intermodal rail lifts surged to 435,000, an increase of 16.1 per cent, or more than 60,000 additional moves.
Total cargo crossing all GPA docks in FY18 grew by eight per cent, or 2.6 million tonnes, to reach a record 36 million tonnes of containerised, breakbulk and bulk cargoes.
Forest products at Mayor's Point Terminal in Brunswick increased by 34.5 per cent, up 35,953 tonnes, for a total of 138,653 tonnes.
Machinery, as well as commodities such as rubber and paper, pushed the breakbulk total at Savannah's Ocean Terminal to 1.35 million tons, up 10 per cent or 122,305 tonnes compared to FY2017.
On Monday, the GPA board approved construction of a US$8.8 million overpass, part of the US$127 million Mason Mega Rail project that, upon completion, will allow 3,048-metre unit trains to be built on terminal.
