The former Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) assistant of the Queensland branch secretary, Dave Perry, allegedly assisted a crime gang which tried to smuggle drugs into Australia, The Age reported on June 30.
Mr Perry has not been charged with any criminal offence and has denied any wrongdoing. Mr Perry, who was stood down from the union two years ago, attended various Port of Brisbane's security committee meetings in 2003 amongst other security-related meetings.
The allegations emerged after an enquiry by the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) found that crime gangs were capable of exploiting security gaps at wharves and airports.
