Finnish naval architecture firm Deltamarin and Athens-based midstream CO2 services company ECOLOG have collaborated on the design of a liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier for the purpose of tendering at shipyards worldwide.

Deltamarin said the new design is designed for intra-EU operations and features short range, low pressure, and a shallow draught.

The initial design phase involved various solutions that the partners carefully studied in order to optimise the vessel for LCO2 transportation. These solutions include different configurations of the cargo containment and handling system, considering the effect of the wide variety of CO2 compositions.

Deltamarin said LNG dual-fuel propulsion, shore power, and wind assistance are also integrated into the design and help to minimise its environmental footprint.

The development of the LCO2 carrier is in line with ECOLOG's broader plan of building and owning a fleet of LCO2 carriers to serve the emerging carbon capture, utilisation and sequestration (CCUS) sector.
