One person has died while another three are in critical condition after they accidentally inhaled ammonia gas caused by a leakage on an LPG tanker anchored in the Strait of Malacca off Malaysia on Tuesday, April 6.

Local emergency responders including fire and rescue personnel and HAZMAT technicians rushed to the scene after the crew of the Panamanian-flagged Hamburg DW sent out a radio call requesting for assistance at around 01:00 local time.

One crewman, a Turkish national, was pronounced dead at the scene while three others were brought to hospital for treatment.

Malaysian authorities said the three injured crewmen were still in critical condition as of Thursday, April 8.

An official of the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said a preliminary investigation revealed a leak in the vessel's piping system that caused the ammonia release.

Hamburg DW was temporarily anchored off Pulau Serat Kering island after having earlier departed Oman. Its final destination is the Port of Zhanjiang in China.
