A 50,000DWT ammonia-powered, medium range oil/chemical tanker design proposal from South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has received an approval in principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The vessel will feature an ammonia engine designed by WinGD and manufactured by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries – Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD), along with its ammonia fuel supply system designed by HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and an ammonia boiler designed by Kangrim Heavy Industries.

ABS has also awarded an AIP to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its design of a midship section and cargo tank for a 96,000DWT very large ammonia carrier.

The ammonia carrier design is the result of a joint development project that included the production of a 3D structural cargo hold model from SHI for review by ABS.

ABS said it completed design reviews for both tanker types based on class and statutory requirements.
