Finland-based ferry operator Finnlines has signed a letter of intent to build three new 7,300 lane metre Ro-Ro vessels.

No other details were disclosed about the plan.

As part of its 2017 financial statements, the Grimaldi Group company reported an €82.7 million (US$101.2 million) EBITDA, up by 21 per cent, for the January to December 2017 period. It was the best company result for the third consecutive year.

President Emanuele Grimaldi said sea freight volumes in Finland increased by more than 12 per cent.

He said more than €1 billion had been spent over the past decade on fleet renewal, green ship technology, propulsion systems, port technology, IT technology and ERP systems.

This includes lengthening four of its 2012- and 2013-built Breeze series Ro-Ro vessels for a 30 per cent capacity increase to 4,200 lane metres of rolling cargo.

Two have been completed, with the other two to be finished by the end of April.
