NYK orders LNG-fueled Capesize bulker
Published on

Japanese shipowner Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has placed an order for a new Capesize bulk carrier to be built locally by Nihon Shipyard.

The 299.99- by 50-metre vessel will be powered by a dual-fuel main engine that will operate primarily on LNG. Conventional diesel will only be used as a backup fuel.

The vessel will be the first LNG-fueled Capesize bulk carrier in the NYK fleet upon its delivery in early 2024. It will operate under charter with JFE Steel Corporation and will be used for the coal and iron ore trade in the Pacific.
