K Line, Namura awarded AIP for LNG-fueled bulker design

DNV GL has awarded Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Namura Shipbuilding a joint approval in principle (AIP) for the two companies' new LNG-fueled ore carrier concept design.

The design is based on that of a series of Namura-built ships optimised for the transport of ore from Australia. The new design modifies the earlier design's cargo hold and locates the tanks in the midships, without changing the hull form or sacrificing significant cargo capacity.

Namura claims that, while operating on LNG, the ship can undertake a round trip between Singapore and Brazil without needing to bunker.
