The Hellenic Coast Guard and some Good Samaritan vessels came to the aid of 17 people who ended up in the water after their yacht sank in the Aegean Sea off Greece's Cyclades Islands on Thursday, August 12.

The incident occurred on the morning (local time) of Thursday when an unidentified UK-registered, 30-metre yacht sank in the Aegean some 24 kilometres off the island of Milos.

The coast guard led the subsequent rescue operation, which also included the high speed ferry Sea Jet 2 (pictured) and a cargo ship that had diverted to the area to render assistance.

All 17 people who were on the yacht were safely rescued by the crews of the responding coast guard and civilian vessels and have since been transported to the port of Milos. No injuries have been reported.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the sinking.
