Cargo ship rescues two castaways off Spain

Published on

A cargo ship rescued two people who had been adrift for three days in the Mediterranean Sea some 104 kilometres off the Spanish coast on Wednesday, September 25.

Catania, a freighter sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, was en route from Ghent to Gemlic when a lookout spotted the two castaways, only one of whom was wearing a life jacket.

After notifying the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) in Almeira, Catania's crew took the distressed individuals, who have both been identified as adult males, on board.

The survivors told the cargo vessel's crew that they had departed Maroc on separate personal watercraft along with a third individual three days prior. They ended up drifting in the Mediterranean after their boats encountered trouble and sank.

The third individual went missing at sea sometime prior to the rescue of his two companions by the crew of Catania.

The survivors were later handed over to the crew of the Salvamento Maritimo search and rescue (SAR) vessel Guardamar Caliope (pictured), which brought them ashore.
