Cargo ship awaiting repair catches fire in Surabaya port

A cargo vessel awaiting its turn to undergo repairs at a port in Surabaya, Indonesia, caught fire in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 29.

The incident involving the 76-metre-long Persada X occurred at Surabaya's Tanjung Perak Port at 04:30 local time. The fire originated in the vessel's engine room and eventually spread to the superstructure and five decks on the stern.

Responding firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze by 09:00. Local authorities said two crewmembers were injured during the evacuation of the burning vessel.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Persada X had been berthed at Tanjung Perak Port for a month when the incident occurred.
