Boomsma Shipping to equip vessel with wind-assisted propulsion
Published on

Netherlands-based Boomsma Shipping is set to install a wind-assisted propulsion system on one of its existing dry bulk vessels.

The eConowind-designed propulsion system will consist of two optimal contact (i.e. non-rotating) foil units that help create thrust by means of the principle of boundary-layer-suction, for which reason ventilators are mounted inside the foils.

The foil units can be placed at different locations on the ship.

Boomsma said the installation of the system is scheduled for September 2020 barring any delays given the current situation. The installation will then be monitored and evaluated throughout the rest of 2020 and 2021.
