Norwegian shipping company Misje Rederi has taken delivery of the second and third bulk carriers in a series of ten to be built by Colombo Dockyard (CDPLC) of Sri Lanka.
Misje Verde and Misje Viola belong to the same series of 5,000DWT bulk carriers designed in compliance to DNV class rules. The newbuilds each have an LOA of 89.95 metres, a beam of 16 metres, a summer draught of 6.55 metres, a moulded depth of 8.8 metres, and a gross tonnage of 3,483. Hold facilities with a total capacity of 6,967 cubic metres are available for the transport of bulk and general cargo, though deck cargo and containers may also be carried.
Each ship is also fitted with a hybrid propulsion system consisting of a four-stroke diesel engine with a rated output of 1,600 kW at 1,000 rpm, a Corvus Orca Energy 994kWh energy storage system (ESS) to supply additional power, and a bow thruster for added lateral manoeuvrability. The propulsion can deliver speeds of up to 13.5 knots.
The use of hybrid technology is in line with Misje Rederi's objective of minimising fuel consumption and reducing emissions during operations. The ships are therefore capable of generating fewer emissions compared to existing bulk carriers of similar size and capacity but fitted with conventional propulsion. The ESS also has shore charging capability.
