A ship operated by Denmark's Unifeeder has commenced trial sailings while being powered by a new type of fuel made from liquefied synthetic natural gas (SNG).
The liquefied SNG, produced at Kiwi Power's Power-to-Gas facility in Germany, is a synthetic form of LNG that is carbon-neutral and generated from 100 per cent renewable energy. The fuel is being trialled on ElbBlue, a Cyprus-flagged containership in the Unifeeder fleet.
Unifeeder said that, with a blend of 20 tonnes SNG and 20 tonnes conventional LNG, it expects ElbBlue to save approximately 56 tonnes of carbon output on its coming voyage to Saint Petersburg, as opposed to operating on 100 per cent LNG.
Other partners on the trials include MAN Energy Solutions, Elbdeich Reederei, LIQUIND Marine, and Wessels Marine.
