Three people were killed while a fourth has gone missing after a commercial vessel capsized at the Port of Castellon in eastern Spain on Friday, May 28.

The crew of the Panamanian-flagged container feeder ship Nazmiye Ana were conducting cargo operations when the vessel suddenly listed heavily and keeled over at around 20:50 local time on Friday, forcing the crew and some of the dock workers to jump into the water.

A number of first responders from various agencies including the Salvamento Maritimo search and rescue (SAR) organisation, the Guardia Civil, the Spanish Red Cross, and local police and fire departments rushed to the scene to render assistance.

Only six out of the 10 people who reportedly jumped into the water were rescued. An Indian crewman from Nazmiye Ana and two dock workers were found dead during a recovery operation that lasted into the early morning hours of Saturday, May 29.

SAR teams are still searching for the missing individual, who has been identified as another Indian crewmember from the same ship.

Three survivors suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the capsizing. One is still under intensive care in a local hospital while another has already been discharged.
