Sweden's first container barge shuttle service on inland waterways started operation between Stockholm Norvik Port and the Port of Vasteras on Tuesday, June 1.

Ports of Stockholm said the container barge shuttle service carries the equivalent of around 200 road haulage vehicles, alleviating road network congestion in the region.

The service will be operated by German shipping company Deymann. The initial sailing along Lake Mälaren was served by the shallow-draught, 208TEU container barge Emelie Deymann.

The sailing time is 15 hours and services commenced with two sailings a week.
