Global shipping company Maersk has confirmed that one of its vessels has become stranded in the Pacific approximately 1,050 kilometres off Alaska after it developed engine trouble while in transit to the US West Coast.
On March 12, the crew of the Singaporean-flagged, 140,000DWT Maersk Eureka had to stop the ship's main engine to replace a damaged fuel pump. Although the ship was able to resume passage the following day, the main engine had to be stopped again on March 14 to allow the crew to perform further investigation.
The ship was sailing from Japan to Long Beach, California, when the trouble began.
Maersk reported that a repair crew was finally sent to the ship via an oceangoing tug based at Dutch Harbour, Alaska, just this past weekend.
The company has not yet disclosed when it expects the engine repairs on Maersk Eureka to be completed.
Maersk has assured that the ship, its crew, and its cargo continue to remain stable and secure.
