The US Coast Guard-led Unified Command for the Goethals Oil Spill has positively identified that tar balls recovered from Jacob Riis Park in Rockaway Park, New York, correlate to the fuel oil discharge caused by the containership Dublin Express on the Arthur Kill Waterway on March 28.
The coast guard's Marine Safety Laboratory completed fingerprinting of the tar balls, verifying the recovered oil was found to match the vessel owned by Hapag-Lloyd as the source.
Jacob Riis Park is approximately 33 kilometres away from the spill site.
Cleanup operations in Arthur Kill Waterway have been ongoing at the Global Marine New York Container Terminal since the incident occurred. Shoreline assessments in New York and New Jersey areas have continued since last week, and there have been no reports of additional impacted areas.
