The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has confirmed the completion of critical infrastructure investments as part of a nearly US$850 million plan to upgrade the Port of Boston.

Prior to the port's modernisation, the Paul W. Conley Container Terminal offered two services reaching seven global ports. With the completion of the infrastructure investments, the Terminal now offers direct connectivity to China, North Europe, Southeast Asia, India, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Latin America through five services, with a sixth service scheduled to start in October.

Massport said the direct connectivity to 25 global ports offers more opportunities for Massachusetts-based importers and exporters to participate in the global economy.

The completed improvement works included the construction of modern container facilities and a new 50-foot (15.2-metre) deep berth and the deepening of Boston Harbor's main ship channel and Reserved Channel to 47 feet (14.3 metres) and the outer harbour to 51 feet (15.5 metres). The dredging scope was executed with the cooperation of the US Army Corps of Engineers.
