South Korean shipping line HMM took delivery of a new containership in a ceremony at Hyundai Heavy Industries' (HHI) Ulsan shipyard on Monday, March 22.

The 16,000TEU vessel, the second in a series of eight ordered from HHI, was christened HMM Gaon that same day.

HII claims that the 365- by 51-metre HMM Gaon is currently the largest ship that can operate in both the Panama and Suez Canals. It is also capable of achieving a speed of 22.3 knots even with a full load of cargo.

The vessel shortly afterward departed Ulsan for Busan Port, where it will begin operating as part of The Alliance.
