Chinese authorities have confirmed that three people were killed and five others have gone missing following a collision between two containerships in the Yangtze River off Shanghai on Sunday, December 13.

The incident occurred at around 23:30 local time when the Chinese-flagged Xin Qi Sheng 69 and the Antigua and Barbuda-registered Oceana (pictured) collided with each other, causing the former to capsize and sink within minutes.

Over 20 vessels were subsequently despatched to assist in search and rescue (SAR) operations.

Authorities report that eight of Xin Qi Sheng 69's 16-strong crew have been rescued. Three of the crew are confirmed dead while the remaining five were still missing as of Monday, December 14.

Oceana is currently anchored near Shanghai as investigators work to determine the events that led to the collision.
