China Shipbuilding Chengxi Ship Repair, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, recently unveiled a 2,500TEU containership that it has converted into the world's largest vessel capable of transporting orange juice.
The vessel has a length of 210.54 metres, a width of 29.8 metres, and a depth of 16.4 metres. It has 15 segregated onboard tanks that have independent cooling systems and can be filled with a total volume of 27,000 cubic metres of orange juice, which is equivalent to 60 million bottles of juice at 500 millilitres each.
The tanks are made of food-grade insulated stainless steel and can be loaded with two types of orange juice: juice at zero degrees Celsius and juice at minus 10 degrees Celsius. This ensures that the juice in transit is free of bacterial contamination.
The vessel's cold storage capacity is 15,700 square metres in area, which is equivalent to the total cold storage area of more than 70 82,000-tonne bulk carriers.
