Russian submarines will soon get increased stealth and camouflage capabilities, significantly improving detection avoidance from sonar, says the Russian Navy.

The announcement, found in public documents regarding the future development of the navy, was confirmed by the St Petersburg Shipbuilding Research Institute, which will be the chief location for the development and implementation of the new submarine technology.

Both the hull and superstructure of the submarines will be constructed from a newly developed material equipped with active sensors and piezopolymer plates that neutralise sonar signals.

The coating will work in tandem with an array of active electronics, which will determine the frequency of enemy radar signals, and emit a neutralising frequency in an opposing phase to dampen sound reflection.

When combined with the low-noise capabilities of fourth-generation Russian submarines, the new subs will be up to three times less visible when in operation.
