Dutch builder Scheepswerf Talsma has been awarded a €1.6 million (US$1.7 million) contract for the construction of a fully electric patrol boat for use by local authorities in the province of Friesland.

The Vripack-designed 15-metre vessel will be fitted with batteries and roof-mounted solar panels that will enable it to sail for hours in between rechargings at shore-based facilities. It may also be configured to accommodate hydrogen fuel cell propulsion in future if required by the operator.

The patrol boat will be the first fully electric vessel to be built by Talsma.
