The Royal Navy's third Dreadnought-class nuclear deterrence submarine will be named HMS Warspite, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

The vessel is set to join the fleet in the 2030s, after which it will conduct deterrence patrols with Trident ballistic missiles for three months at a time.

The future Warspite is the eighth Royal Navy ship and the service's second submarine to carry the name.

The first was a 38-gun sailing ship that served during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I while the sixth was a Queen Elizabeth-class battleship that fought in both World Wars and earned a total of 15 battle honours, more than any other single warship in Royal Navy history.
