The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has awarded BAE Systems an £85 million (US$116.4 million) contract to support early design and concept work on the Royal Navy's next generation of nuclear-powered attack submarines.
The new submarine class will eventually replace the Royal Navy's seven Astute-class boats, the final three examples of which will enter service within this decade.
BAE Systems will work alongside the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), Rolls-Royce, Babcock International Group, and other partners on the SSN-Replacement (SSNR) program.
