The Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) has selected three companies to continue to the next phase of the tender to replace the country's aging Walrus-class submarines.

Spain's Navantia has been eliminated from the competition and France's Naval Group, Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), and Sweden's Saab Kockums have been cleared to proceed to the next phase, which will evaluate each bid vessel's cost, risk management, and ability to protect national security interests while operating over long distances.

The MoD said that it hopes to acquire four examples of the winning submarine design.
