Spain’s first S-80-class submarine begins sea trials

Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has completed the initial series of sea trials of the future Isaac Peral, the first S-80-class diesel-electric submarine ordered by the Spanish Navy.

The trials were carried out in the Mediterranean Sea off Cartagena in late May. Further outfitting will then commence to prepare the submarine for delivery to the navy in 2023.

Named after a Spanish naval officer and submarine designer, the future Isaac Peral has an LOA of 80.8 metres, a hull diameter of 7.3 metres, and a submerged displacement of approximately 3,000 tonnes. An air-independent propulsion (AIP) system will supply the boat with electrical power at any depth so that it can remain underwater for longer periods.
