South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reports that the country's government, through the Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), has awarded local shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) a contract for the construction of a new KSS-3 diesel-electric submarine.
At 89 metres long, the new submarine will be 5.5 metres longer than the earlier boats in the KSS-3 series, otherwise known as the Dosan Ahn Changho-class. Its armament will include ballistic missiles, land attack cruise missiles, and torpedoes.
The newbuilding contract is valued at approximately ₩985.7 billion (US$853 million).
