Russia's TASS news agency reports that the country's first submarine designed specifically to serve as a mother ship for the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) is set to be launched in spring of this year.

The upcoming launch was confirmed by Russian President Vladimir Putin while speaking to the Federal Assembly on Wednesday, February 20.

No details about the submarine have been provided aside from its being nuclear-powered and that construction work is proceeding on schedule.

The Poseidon UUV that the new submarine will carry will reportedly also have an onboard nuclear propulsion system of its own, which will enable it to achieve high underwater speeds and long range.
