General Dynamics Electric Boat has delivered the nuclear-powered attack submarine South Dakota to the US Navy.

South Dakota is the seventeenth ship of the Virginia-class submarines as well as the seventh of the eight-ship group of Virginia-class submarines known as Block III.

The submarine displaces 7,835 tonnes, with a hull length of 114.91 metres and a diameter of 10.36 metres.

It is capable of speeds in excess of 25 knots and can dive to a depth greater than 243 metres, while carrying Mark 48 advanced capability torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
